Q8Oils has renewed its Q8 Ravel range of corrosion protection fluids. The objective was to develop a novel modern rust preventive metalworking oil based on the newest additive technology. The new products all meet the latest industrial requirements and have been extensively tested in the laboratories.
The existing Q8 Ravel range consists of seven products with three important grades:
- Q8 Ravel A – Solvent based – Oily film
- Q8 Ravel D – Solvent based – Wax film
- Q8 Ravel BWX – Oily film
These products are based on different additive technologies.
Renewed Q8 Ravel corrosion protection fluids
The new Q8 Ravel products are based on the most suitable base fluids and one common new additive platform. The new formulations have been extensively tested in the laboratories and will be introduced in the first quarter of 2018:
- Q8 Ravel DTX 1203: an oily film dewatering
- Q8 Ravel TX 630: an oily film with high Flash Point
- Q8 Ravel WX 1202: a waxy film for long term protection
- Q8 Ravel T 803: a cost effective waxy film for long term protection
The laboratory results of Q8 Ravel
The corrosion protection characteristics of the new Q8 Ravel range have been verified and benchmarked against market leader products in several laboratory tests.
1. Salt spray test
The salt spray test (following the ASTM B 117 test method) is an accelerated test for outdoor storage and salt atmosphere exposure. The test showed a remarkable difference between the Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 and the benchmark product. The benchmark product showed the first signs of corrosion within 6 hours. The Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 started to corrode after 48 hours. The following pictures show the salt spray test results after a 24 hour waiting time. The difference is obvious.

2. Water displacement test
The water displacement test (following the MIL-PRF-16173E test method) shows the ability of a rust preventive to displace water from a metal surface. The metal strip is first submerged in distilled water for five seconds and immediately submerged in an RP oil solution for 15 seconds. Afterwards the metal strip is exposed to a static humidity chamber at 25°C for one hour. The Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 did not show any signs of rust, mottling or surface stains and consequently passed the test.

3. Water separation test
The water separation test measures the ability of a rust preventive to separate water carryover from rinse operations. The Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 showed a complete separation after 3 minutes with a clear oil- and water phase. The benchmark product took 6 minutes to reach a complete separation, while the oil phase was hazy and the water phase was also slightly hazy. The Q8Oils product scored visibly better.

4. Stack stain test
The stack stain test (following the MIL-C-22235A test method) is an accelerated test to determine the effect of water contamination, heat, and metal to metal contact on coiled or stacked metal surfaces. Two metal panels were coated with an RP solution and stacked in a sandwich arrangement where they were stored at 82°C for 24 hours. Another set of metal panels was coated with the same RP solution and contaminated with water. Again they were stacked in a sandwich arrangement and stored at 82°C for 24 hours. The panels with Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 did not show any signs of rust or stain and consequently passed the test. The panels with the benchmark product showed clear staining at the surface and failed the test.

Conclusion
The Q8 Ravel DTX 1203 showed excellent results in all laboratory tests. The newly developed corrosion protection fluid performed remarkably better then a comparable market leader product.
