Did you know Galilei reduces leakage & wear?

Paper manufacturing is a high demanding industry where production efficiency plays an important role. Did you know you can increase process reliability and safety, while reducing maintenance costs just by using the appropriate lubricant?

An important paper manufacturer asked Q8Oils to look into the production process of fluting and testliner paper from 100g/m² till 215 g/m². For their yearly production of 200.000 tonnes of paper, they were currently using Q8 Goya NT 220 mineral oil to lubricate their heavy paper mill machinery with 55 cylinders, 38 web cylinders and a central oil system of 10.000 liter.

What was the problem?

They suffered two major issues:

  • Oil leakage: At temperatures lower than 40°C the installation showed severe cold start problems. The insufficient pre-heating system led to oil leakages, causing high maintenance costs.
  • Bearing failures: A bad heat dissipation in combination with non-isolated bearings caused high bearing temperatures. This resulted in a range of undesired effects such as oil oxidations, deposit forming and carbonization together with non-sufficient oil viscosity causing wear problems.

How Q8Oils solved the problems

It was clear that the currently used Q8 Goya NT 220 mineral base CLP gear oil was not the best choice for the high-demanding paper manufacturing installation.

After a detailed analysis, the Q8Oils experts picked the Q8 Galilei 320 CLP synthetic gear oil as the best fit. This synthetic base lubricant with better viscometrics, enhanced oxidation stability and increased oil film strength would solve the oil leakage and bearing failures.

Prior to replacing the oil, the circulating system was cleaned with a cleaning agent to remove varnish and sludge and to secure the quality of the new oil. The system was cleaned, flushed and filled with the new Q8 Galilei 320 lubricant within 48 hours, minimizing production downtime.

The results

Several months after the oil replacement, the installation suffers less oil leakages. The top-up volume after the changeover is clearly reduced.

The bearing lifetime is extended considerably avoiding bearing failure and replacement.

By replacing the old mineral base CLP gear oil with Q8 Galilei 320 CLP gear oil, the paper manufacturer benefits from reduced maintenance costs, increased reliability, capacity and safety.
