How Q8Oils is contributing to a Sustainable Future

Article 2: How the Oil and Gas Industry Supports the UN’s Sustainable Development goals

In our first article we explained how Member States of the United Nations are working together to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as part of a universal action plan to achieve a ‘better and more sustainable future for all’.

Here we look at how the oil and gas industry, and in particular Q8Oils, is contributing to these goals.

The oil and gas industry is central to economies around the world, in both developing and emerging countries. The affordable energy it provides drives economic and social growth and is critical to sustainable development.

Many oil and gas companies have committed significant resources to advance sustainable development. In doing so, they are not only supporting the aims of the SDGs, but are also introducing standards and practices that often far exceed regulatory requirements.

The United Nations has defined 17 SDGs and our industry can potentially support all of these, both through positive contributions and by minimising any negative impact of activities. The diagram below shows examples of how the oil and gas industry can contribute to each goal.

Companies can achieve even greater positive impact by integrating SDGs into their core business through corporate systems, policies, standards and processes. Achieving this requires a shared understanding among stakeholders of how SDGs can create value and align with the company’s goals, together with strong leadership and the involvement and commitment of employees.

Q8Oils’ parent company, Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) has embedded world-class corporate systems throughout the organisation; these drive our vision to be a progressive, ethical and customer-centric company, which places the highest priority on the sustainability of our business, society and the environment.

These include an award-winning Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) system and a Quality Management system which is aligned to the latest ISO standards and has been certified to RC 14001:2015ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015.

Other examples are a Business Management System, which standardises and simplifies all business processes, and Enterprise Risk Management to provide a systematic approach to minimising risk.

These corporate systems are firmly established within Q8Oils and align directly with the United Nations’ goals.

In the following articles, we will explain how Q8Oils contributes to specific Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Climate action
  • Life below water
  • Life on land
  • Good health and well-being
  • Clean water and sanitation
